Generally, A Fellow is a professional engineer who is working in a senior role, and they have major autonomy and responsibility. Besides that, they can show the below-listed qualities:

Essential:

  • A role of senior responsibility or/and significant autonomy in your particular field
  • Leadership qualities
  • Strategy-making decisions and influencing policy in either a technical or business environment
  • A structured way to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) explaining both the way you have developed your CPD in your career to date and how you plan your future CPD
  • The promotion of the profession of engineering to potential engineers and young engineers

Desirable:

  • Highly expert knowledge in a particular engineering area
  • Technical or engineering resource management or/and personnel management and development

Optional:

Responsibility for a budget and the related risk

Active development and application of new technologies in engineering and related senior-level areas

Application of a major range of fundamental principles and complex techniques across a broad and often unpredictable variety of contexts

How to start your application for Fellowship:

You can apply to upgrade to the grade of Fellow if you are Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician member. In addition, you can apply directly to the Fellow grade by filling in a more detailed application.

Upgrading from IMechE Member:

If you are already registered as an EngTech, IEng or CEng and a Member of IMechE (MIMechE), you have to show proof of fulfilling the Fellowship eligibility criteria. For that, we advise you to hire an expert who is well-familiar with the assessment and eligibility criteria of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
