In a remote area near Chidambaram, Annamalai Chettiar founded three colleges in the early 1920s: Sri Meenakshi College, Sri Meenakshi Tamil College, and Sri Meenakshi Sanskrit College. In 1928, the local administration and Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar made the decision to move the institution and create a university. As Per the Annamalai Institution Act of 1928, the institution was thus created on January 1, 1929.
