"When I was at Blizzard," said Wilson, "the reason for doing the real-money auction house was to ensure security. The reason was not money. We weren't expecting to earn that much money from it. The main issue with Diablo IV Gold was item duping and duping hacks as well as all of the sellers selling gold, along with all those things."
According to Wilson explained, Blizzard's plan to avoid this issue in Diablo 3 was to take the control of the market for trading. This was also the main reason behind Diablo 3's move to require an always-on internet connection. Wilson asserts that the second you provide an offline client, hackers "got you." Thus, being always on the internet and the auction house were Blizzard's failed attempts at controlling problems from Diablo 2.
After its release in 2012 the auction house in Diablo 3 was recognized as one the biggest flaws in the game, getting a constant mocking and criticism by the players. However, getting rid of it wasn't easy and wasn't due to technical difficulties. Instead, the reason it was delayed until removal in 2014 was due it was an enticement feature of the game that was printed on all its retail boxes as well as there were legal concerns regarding cutting it off.
"The reason why we didn't get rid of it right away when we saw it was a problem is legally we didn't think that we could , despite it being prominently advertised on the boxes," said Wilson. "So we actually had to wait a while to sort out the legal issues, and we finally said 'OK, we think it's worth the effort in the event of an action, but it's not that bad.'"
Funny thing is, when everything was done, Wilson claims that the auction house didn't even achieve Blizzard the money it needed and he says that when it was worth more than 10 or 15 million dollars, the designer would have been "surprised." And while this may sound like an awful large amount however the former Diablo 3 designer countered that World of Warcraft makes that sort of cash every few hours or so. Another participant who was on the panel laughed at the idea that, just like the rest of us there's a reason why you "always just accuse lawyers." That's right, people hated it and it didn't earn much profit. The whole thing was a waste of buy Diablo 4 Gold time for everyone involved!
