A dip into the fascinating world of LIDAR Autonomous Vehicles

.

Autonomous cars and other vehicles are some of the most recent and sophisticated additions to the automobile engineering domain. Since these robotic cars rely on technology and zero human intervention for their operations, these vehicles are fitted with high-end and elite sensory technology like light detection and ranging or LIDAR. This technology applies laser pulses to the scene to form high-end and sharp 3D images to understand the vehicle environment. But it is not only the image. It also measures the full geometry of the scene, meaning that all relative distances and volumes in the scenario have been completely and accurately measured. These new-age cars are fascinating objects of automobile engineering.

The way LIDAR sensors work

Most LIDAR autonomous vehicles have their sensors positioned on the top of the vehicle front and release laser pulses. These pulses touch the surfaces of different objects in front of the car and around it and a part of the light bounces back. The sensory technology calculates the time that has been taken by the laser ray to return after hitting the surface of the object to understand the distance of the object. This technology generates a point cloud, which is perceived in the format of a 3D picture to represent the environment around the vehicle, including all the geometry involved.
