Attaining a positive ASET assessment for the Professional Technologist registration will help you take your career to the next level. P.Tech. (Geo.)/(Eng.) members get the right to practice engineering or geoscience independently within a defined scope of practice and as per established codes and standards. Using this right, you may sign and stamp your own engineering or geoscience work.
Eligibility criteria:
For a positive ASET assessment for registration as a P.Tech.(Eng.)/(Geo.), you are required to:
Be a graduate of a two-year technical post-secondary program.
Possess a minimum of 6 years of post-graduate technical engineering or geoscience experience, including a minimum of 2 years under the supervision of an Alberta P.Eng. or P.Geo.
Be a C.E. T. member of ASET in good standing

Application process:
The following are the five steps of the application process:
Application:
- You need to apply online and pay the fees.
- Staff will open your file to obtain transcript/academic evaluation from the C. E. T. application.
Evidence:
- You need to upload a work experience spreadsheet.
- It’s a must for you to provide the authority with contact information for professional references.
Exam:
You have to complete the NPPE (National Professional Practice Exam).
Assessment:
- Staff will review your experience spreadsheet and ask you for additional information if necessary.
- Subject matter expert reviewers will conduct an application pre-assessment (three-four weeks after submission).
- APEGS/ASET Joint Board of Examiners will review the completed application and make a decision on registration, JBoE meetings happen quarterly.
Post-assessment:
- Decision letters are sent to a new member within 3-4 weeks after the decision of the board.
- A new P.Tech. member may ask for a digital or/and physical professional stamp.
- A new P.Tech. member may order framed certificate or/and member ring.
- A P.Tech member is subject to completing yearly Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
